"I had a back injury [several years ago] that I never recovered from and [finally] was diagnosed with chronic pain syndrome. I ended up off work, severely depressed and in debilitating pain if I tried to do anything I would normally have done previously...I had been very active with hiking, canoe trips, cross country skiing, etc. Then, if I even try to pick up [my grandchildren] I would pay for days. My injury was from C6 to T10 and all my upper left side, my ribs, my arm and spine, with nothing significant on MRI. I now have other symptoms, like feeling so stiff and sore all over when I got out of bed, it felt like I had been hit by a truck. When we had a couple of cold damp days I thought I was coming down with the flu I ached from head to toe. I have lower abdominal pain when I feel I have to have a stool, that doubles me over. I have been on a sleep aid for a few years as I had trouble sleeping because of pain,but now I wake up through the night because of discomfort....I thought my hips were going on me, because I`m a side sleeper and it was too painful to lay on my side for long. I'm out of bed by 5-530 every morning and spend the rest of the day so tired, but find it hard to nap, I'm too restless. The list goes on, but I saw a rheumatologist [last week] who told me I definitely had fibromyalgia. Is there any correlation between the two?"

FROM DOM: Yes. This letter is so typical of my mail. I hear from many people whose FMS/CFIDS began after an injury to the neck or back, surgery, childbirth, bereavement, divorce, childhood or domestic abuse, or severe, unrelenting life stresses. This reader's symptoms sound like classic fibromyalgia to me. I was diagnosed in 1982 www.fms-help.com/fibro.htm. I have many helpful articles on my site www.fms-help.com, including 100 Tips for Coping www.fms-help.com/tips.htm. It was an extremely difficult time in my life - to go from being so active and productive, to having mysterious symptoms of pain, fatigue, insomnia, depression, etc. No one understood my plight.

"I read the article referenced in your newsletter on "alpha-wave intrusion" because my wife has this. (The doctor told her that the only sleep medication that provides sleep and eliminates alpha-waves is Xyrem, which is sodium oxybate, a.k.a. GHB, but she was afraid of this drug.) The author of the article claims natural remedies can eliminate alpha-wave intrusion, and the link provided is for such a spray, which is, coincidentally, sold by the author of the article. How fortuitous! (My BS detector is going off, but I'm trying to keep an open mind.) The product is called "Scent To Sleep" http://www.scenttosleep.com/ Of course they claim 100% effectiveness guaranteed, just like everybody else selling these kinds of supplements. I went to your archives and cannot find any mention of it, though they claim to have been around for awhile. I was wondering if anybody else had any experience with this product. After all, they claim to be able to literally cure insomnia with this spray! Where has this miracle been, and why aren't more fibromytes singing its praises from the roof-tops! <wink-wink> My wife would love to be able to stop taking Ambien some day. Might this be the silver bullet and panacea that she has been waiting for? Ah, I sure wish it were this easy! I'd buy it by the case if it really worked!! I wonder if anybody has ever tried this product?"

FROM DOM: Please write dombush@bellsouth.net if you have tried Scent to Sleep. This is the first time I've heard of it, although I do use essential oils for relaxation to sleep - see www.fms-help.com/oilsstore.htm. But I still depend on meds to sleep www.fms-help.com/what.htm - natural things stopped working for me when I turned 47. I am for anything that helps people get sleep!! About GHB, search my site using the Google box at the end of this page. I have mentioned GHB (sodium oxybate) several times in past newsletters. It is considered risky. I also have heard from people who tried it, but still didn't sleep. Everyone with insomnia is unique as to what can help. The scent of Lavender may help people sleep better. Men and women who smelled lavender oil experienced deeper sleep and higher levels of vigor in the morning, according to Wesleyan University researchers. Lavender is one of the essential oils I use to get to sleep - the other one is Peace & Calming. My oils store is at www.younglivingworld.com (#905788). But I also have to use meds. I've had a sleep disorder since I was 16. I am now 59.

"Attention to everyone. I know this person personally and she does not send things out at every little things. I also knew her mother and she was a good Christian lady. So keep their family in your prayers. Even though she had a good life, she will be greatly missed." [Below is the snippet.]

I received this information from a friend whose mother recently passed away. Apparently, this was caused by a medication that is deadly. Here are the details. Subject: Phenylpropanolamine (PPA)

I would like to thank those of you who expressed condolences on the recent passing of my mother. She suffered a hemorrhagic stroke while she was driving home from my house at 7:30 and passed away at 8:30. My mother's stroke and passing was an enormous shock to my family because she did not have any symptoms or risk factors for a stroke. Just the week before she had gone to her doctor for a check up and received a clean bill of health. She did, however, develop a cold while she was visiting me and had taken Alka Seltzer Cold Plus for 3 days. Since her passing, we have learned that Alka Seltzer is one of the many cold medicines that contains Phenylpropanolamine (PPA) which can cause hemorrhagic stokes or cerebral bleeding even with the first use. I am forwarding a list of other medications that currently use PPA. These medicines are supposedly being recalled but my mother just purchased this medication less than two weeks ago. Pharmaceutical companies have known about this danger for years, we unfortunately, did not.

I urge you to review the list of medicines with PPA and avoid these medications. All drugs containing PHENYLPROPANOLAMINE are dangerous. You may want to try calling the 800 number listed on most drug boxes and inquire about a REFUND. Please read this CAREFULLY. Also, please pass this on to everyone you know. STOP TAKING anything containing this ingredient. It has been linked to increased hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding in brain) among women ages 18-49 in the three days after starting use of medication. Problems were not found in men, but the FDA recommended that everyone (even children) seek alternative medicine.

I just found out and called the 800# on the container for Triaminic and they informed me that they are voluntarily recalling the following medicines because of a certain ingredient that is causing strokes and seizures in children:

FROM DOM: This was interesting to me because my beloved father died from complications of a hemorrhagic stroke in 2005 www.fms-help.com/eulogy.htm. He was on various medications, and I wonder if one of these caused this terrible event?

"I have a question about acne occuring concurrently with FMS. Prior to the condition kicking in, I had near-perfect skin with the occasional spot premenstrually. Today, I have numerous zits- some cystic in nature that take forever to clear up. And all this despite having supremely dry skin- thanks, in part, to the nortriptyline I'm taking and in part, I'm guessing due to the ailment itself. I have been putting off taking isotretinoin as the last thing I need is yet another pill to add to the list. I was wondering if you have experienced (God-forbid!) or encountered any cases of CFS/FM where patients have developed acne. If internists/neurologists/ GPs are hardly aware of the existence and management of the FM/CFS spectrum, I doubt dermatologists have an inkling of the correlation between acne and CFS either. Any words of wisdom?"

FROM DOM: I used an immune balancer that works in the "gut," and it cleared up my lifelong acne problem in very short time. (It is said that the acne problem begins in the gut.) FROM DOM: For those of us with CFIDS, the recent XMRV discovery and work of the WPI (Whittemore Peterson Institute) may be key to our recovery. For those who cast doubt upon the XMRV tests, here is a rebuttal: "The contamination arguments, claiming the positive results are due to mouse DNA, cannot explain why positive samples show an immune response to XMRV, or why XMRV can be cultured from samples. In addition, the samples were tested specifically for mouse DNA, in order to ensure there would be no contamination. The contamination papers are not relavant to the most important studies indicating the finding of XMRV in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and the existence of XRMV still stands firm. As of December 2010, the American Red Cross and international blood banks began banning blood donation from people with CFS. The government is currently working to develop a fast and accurate test for XMRV in order to protect the blood supply. In unpublished research XMRV has been found associated with multiple other illnesses, including chronic Lyme disease. It is associated with lymphoma, prostate cancer, inflammatory breast cancer, fibromyalgia, autism, Parkinson's, and Multiple Sclerosis, among other inflammatory conditions. There is no proof yet that it is causative, but it is being found in higher numbers than would otherwise be expected." In the Gordon Medical cohort so far approximately half of the patients who are positive for XMRV also have Lyme disease. Many also have EBV, HHV-6 and CMV, and other infections. Some patients who are diagnosed with "CFS" respond partially or completely after treating the Lyme disease. Other patients experience benefits by taking valtrex, valcyte or other antiviral medications active against herpes-viruses. Though valtrex and valcyte do not usually cure CFS, they can help people feel better by reducing the immune system load imparted by viral co-infections."

FROM DOM: I have been taking Acyclovir daily to prevent cold sores and also thwart the shingles virus for about 2 years. I believe this has improved my overall health - along with other measures I take, listed at www.fms-help.com/what.htm. I am able to work and function better now than in many years gone by. I developed FMS in June 1982 at age 30 www.fms-help.com/fibro.htm and CFIDS in 1987 www.fms-help.com/fatigue.htm. I look forward to a CURE for this illness.

It is encouraging to hear people overcoming against great adversity. I am not happy about where I am physically but I understand there is not much I can do to change that and have to figure out how to make things work creatively."

I DON'T KNOW IF YOU HAD TROUBLE WITH DECAY UNDER A CROWN OR IF THIS INFORMATION WILL HELP, BUT I AM GLAD SOMEONE TOLD ME ABOUT ENDODONTICS. Snippet: " In 2002, the journal Lancet published compelling evidence that contaminated polio vaccine was responsible for up to half of the 55,000 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma cases that were occurring each year. What was it contaminated with? SV40, a cancer-causing monkey virus. The puzzle began in 1994, when Dr. Michele Carbone, a Loyola University researcher, found the virus SV40, which had never before been detected in humans, in half of the human lung tumors he was studying. Since then, 60 different lab studies have confirmed the results, and SV40 has been found in a variety of human cancers, including lung-, brain-, bone-, and lymphatic cancer. At first no one could fathom how the virus had been transmitted into the human population. But in the censored interview with Dr. Maurice Hilleman above, Hilleman admits Merck's responsibility in unleashing this virus via their polio vaccine, as well as the likelihood that there was an importing and spreading the AIDS virus in the same manner." "I recommend that you be tested for Epstein Barr virus if you have not already done so. Last year I noticed a disturbing trend in that people who contacted me with fibro are not being tested for this by their docs and when tested had high titers of this virus. It is common in people with Chronic Fatigue syndrome/fibro and can be treated with anti-viral meds. Nicknamed Kissing Fever (mononucleosis) it is easily transmitted.
