DOM'S
FMS/CFIDS/ME NEWSLETTER
September
13, 2009
Dom's Christian-based newsletter for people with Fibromyalgia
(FMS), Chronic Fatigue & Immune Dysfunction Syndrome
(CFIDS), or Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (M.E.)
and their families.
16 SHORT TOPICS. READERS' COMMENTS IN BLACK.
MY COMMENTS IN
TEAL.
The votes are in! Left-alignment won out over
center-alignment by a very small margin, so I will center the
beginning and ending of each newsletter but left-align
the articles for easier reading. -

1. READERS
WRITE
"Thanks for all that you do, if I hadn’t found your
website www.fms-help.com 3 years ago I would have thought
I was the only one having all these issues. It seems like the minute we
find a solution to one problem, the body thinks of another way to
sabotage itself."
"Thank you for your efforts and time to help all of us
fibromites with your very informative
information."
"Your newsletter has been a
bright spot for me. I finally feel that I am not
alone. I have spent years trying to find a reason for all of my
symptoms and have listened to every assinine
diagnosis!"
"You have so much knowledge of how to try and
manage your fibromyalgia, and you are so willing to share it with
others that don't have that knowledge. Thank you! Another thing, you
are always out there searching for new information that
needs to be told."
"Thank you, Dominie, for your precious words of
encouragement.....I appreciate them more than you could know! and
for the sweet words at the end of your post...you are certainly a true friend to
us all."
2. HANDS
HURTING
From a
reader--
"I have been having lots of problems with my hands were
hurting so bad. I told my daughter I wished that I had heated gloves to
put them into. She told me to heat the wax in my hot wax machine. After the wax
was melted I dipped each of my hands into it 3 times; then put plastic wrap
around it and a sock over that to hold the heat in. I left that on for 20
minutes and it definitely helped. Since it worked so good I then did my
feet. I used lavender scented wax. (I was chosen to have fibro
because God knows that I have the strength for all the trials and tribulations
that are to be conquered. He also knows that I am compassionate enough to
help others with fibro.)"
3. BLOOD PRESSURE & LOW
BLOOD VOLUME
"I have found that my blood pressure will not
register on the cuff I have or ANY cuff when my blood volume is messing
up. I know it is happening because I get dizzy....and i will get heart
palps and breathing problems (almost like a panic attack start-up). I will
take my BP and sure enough...EE will the the final result.
I thought my cuff was broken, so I bought a new
one (expensive action!) and it did the same ting! A doctor that I
communicate with on my M.E. forum suggested it is because of the lack of oxygen
that we have due to low blood volume....and the reason it DOES that is because
our BP is dropping too fast for the machine to pick it up.
He suggested I lie down until it subsided each
time. The entire forum (M.E.) agreed they also suffer from this; for most
of them, they were diagnosed with POTS and also with I.O. which I do
have)..the orthostatic problem comes and goes for me,
and I have doctors who don't believe in this, so are not willing to test me.
Anyhow..to have you mention this problem simply
made it all "REAL". so how many of us with FMS also actually have
M.E. I have every single symptoms of M.E. - just different ones at
different times. I don't know what to blame for each attack."
4. SHINGLES
PAIN
From a
reader--
FROM DOM: My doc
said to use Lyrica for shingles (nerve) pain, but I prefer to try something
natural instead of more drugs, which can mess up your liver, stomach,
kidneys, brain, etc. I also saw that DMSO
is a way to get rid of shingles.
5. TROUBLE SLEEPING?
From a
reader--
"Years ago when my late husband passed away
suddenly, I had trouble going to sleep at night. I found a radio program that
was like no other. I would prepare for, and go to bed in time to turn on
this wonderful program. The soft, deep voice of this man would
come on, and he would share a word from the Lord, and some songs that were just
made to comfort and calm my entire being. I find this program is still
on after these many years, although, the man with the wonderful voice is now in
the Assisted Living Facility where my husband's mom lives. (right now she
is in another facility for rehab) My husband and I have had several
opportunities to talk to this man as he comes to all the church services we
hold there at the Assisted Living Facility. He is such a blessing,
even though his body is being attacked in a vicious way with Parkinson's
Disease. He has such an interesting story about his life, and you can also
read it on line. This program may or may not help you in your
sleeping problems, but I find it helps me close the day with a wonderful
word from the Lord, given in such a meaningful way. There is just
no way to explain how this affects me -- you would just have to listen to the
program for yourself. I HIGHLY recommend you at least try to find this
radio station where you live, and then look for: "Nightsounds with Bill Pearce" www.nightsoundsradio.org.
I feel sure you will be blessed in one way or another if you can find and
listen to him and the message he gives five nights a week. (I don't think
he is on week-ends) If you are like me, and awake anyway, why not
try it. As I said, "It surely has helped me!" And find and read his bio if
possible - what an interesting person he is, and what a servant for our
Lord!"
FROM DOM: I have heard the
program "Nightsounds" before and it is great! Thanks for reminding
me. I just found out it is on at 10:30 p.m. weekdays on our local
Christian radio station (WAY radio, 550 AM here in Green Cove Springs, Florida -
the station is just a mile or two from our house!) I plan to tune in lots
more to this program. It was soooo soothing. BTW, I also like the
"Pacific Garden Mission" dramatic stories of conversions at 8:00
p.m.
6. TEETH
WHITENING - DANGEROUS?
Reader
1--
"I haven't personally tried any home tooth
whitening kits, but my son did and due to having to paint his teeth with the
whitening solution and place a mouthgard over it before bed each night
he became quite ill due to consuming (in his sleep) some of the
poisonous hydrogen peroxide in the whitening solution. To be honest Dom, I really wouldn't recomend using those
kits to anyone. My son keeps very good health normally, but that stuff
really knocked him around."
Reader
2--
"I, too, wondered about the OTC teeth
whiteners. My brother and sister and I all have very dark teeth, have had
discoloration and yellowness of teeth that usually "comes with age, but started
very young in our family. We resigned ourselves to it, as nothing seemed
to work. Then I decided to try Crest White
Strips. I bought them for about $30 as a birthday gift to
myself. I was feeling old and couldn't afford plastic surgery (as if I
would do it anyway), but decided I could do something about my teeth.
After 2 weeks, the effect was startling! No, it didn't
give me perfectly white teeth, but it certainly set my tooth age about 30
years! To this day, my sister still points out how my teeth are much
whiter than hers and my brothers because I "used something" on them. As
with age, the discoloration accumulates again, but my teeth are still not nearly
as bad as they were 4 years ago, and I haven't gotten around to using it
again. Now they have new super formulas that only take 7 days, but the 14
day treatment certainly worked wonders for me. The only drawback
to it is sensitive teeth. I consulted a dentist about the
possibility of tooth damage, and he said that the main ingredients are basically
hydrogen peroxide, which is used to treat many mouth conditions. He told
me that Sensodyne toothpaste would take care of the sensitivity, which it
did. I didn't have to stay on it because the sensitivity didn't come back
once I got rid of it. Anyway, hope this helps. I would
definitely recommend Crest White Strips. I plan to use them again. I
was surprised at how long the results have lasted."
Reader
3--
"As for teeth whitening, I just bought
Crest White Strips. Haven't tried them yet as you can't
drink, eat or smoke for the thirty minutes they're on your teeth. I got
the advice to buy Crest by a guy who has used different products. He
practically glows in the dark! But he said the dentist told him to only
use the Crest as the others will take the enamel off your teeth. And to
buy a tooth-sensitive toothpaste when you use the white strips as they may make
your teeth sensitive. Evidently you're only supposed to use them once in
several months; otherwise they can do damage. I find it interesting
that you are taking oxygen. I stumbled on to this myself a few months
ago. The drops really do give me more energy and less pain! I don't
need the nap that I took in the afternoons after work any more. I'm taking
something called "Cell Food", which is $33 (Cdn), but it lasts a month.
Remember the lady on your chat line a few years ago who talked constantly about
alkalizing your body? She may have been right. Of course, trying to
stick to a diet low in acidic foods is difficult.... I agree with you that fibro
is probably an infection or virus in our brains. No one has found it
yet."
FROM DOM: I
tried Cell Food a few years ago without any noticeable effect, but each of us
are different as to what helps. I guess we must be like detectives,
looking for our unique clues to improved health. I'm still getting good
results from the alkalizing
and oxygenating drops.

"A few weeks ago, I saw a
photo of
myself, and was shocked at how brown my teeth were. I can't
do
the tooth whitening kits, due to all the chemicals, and MCS.
However,
since I have the Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) in
the
house, I have been brushing my teeth with it, and in the past
week, my
teeth have gotten a lot whiter. I'm not sure if there
is a right way
to do it. But, what I do is: Put about one Tbsp of
water in a drinking
glass, then six drops of H2O2 and swirl it
around. I dip my
toothbrush in this and leaning over the sink
(to prevent getting it on
my clothes). I brush my teeth for
about two minutes, only doing it
once a day. When I am finished,
I rinse my mouth with plain water, so
the H2O2 doesn't irritate my
gums, or lips. I haven't remembered to
do it every day, but it
has really made a difference."
7. THOUGHTS ON
IMMUNITY
From a
reader--
"My honest opinion is that a new type of specialist
be educated for these immune disorders. My
reason for saying this is everyone can have like symptoms, and these are
different in all, but the trigger is most unique for each individual. The
person or persons treating such individuals should be able to do so refining
each case as non comparable to any other one. The reason I say this each
one has a different trigger that is responsible and controls the illness,
and without defining the trigger it can not be treated! If a trigger is
chemical and one is given meds with like or the same compound that trigged the
illness this would only make it worse, this happens in so many cases and just
adds to the complications. I myself have been on that merry-go-around!! To
begin with the worst that ever happened was all the new
antibacterial chemicals on the market have also
killed off the good bacteria that protects the immune system. It
all starts thinking back when we drank milk right from the cow and babies were
feed breast milk! Now it's all pasteurized and baby formulas are fed that are
sterile and artificial, so at the beginning there is no
resistance built up to any natural bacteria . So this child grows up
and passes the already zero immune system to there child plus
this child is exposed to more new minus natural bacteria issues until there is
no immunity at all! Until the government goes back and changes all this I
don't see any real road to a cure! This is just one thing that has induced these
immune disorders, it goes on and on and I don't see anyone willing to reproduce
a way to reinstate good bacteria into our bodies after it's undone. And how
would they get the good bacteria to do this? Of course it would be artificial
and would it cause more problems? And how would all us disabled people pay for
it if they did?"
FROM DOM: I began using an
immune balancing
shake in 2001, when a reader told me about it. I
still drink one of these daily. Still tastes great after all these years
and keeps me from having swollen glands, gas and bloating,
complexion breakouts, racing thoughts, and keeps my sleep from becoming so badly
deregulated (even with sleeping pills.) The immune shake is one of
the main things I take daily to try to have a functioning immune
system. I was given gamma globulin shots as a child because I had so
many respiratory illnesses (which runs on one side of our family). I grew
up to be a sickly adult and had to quit teaching school (even though I loved
it), because I was sick all the time with viruses, flus, fevers, nausea, etc.
www.fms-help.com/fatigue.htm. I
am glad that I have been able to be a piano teacher www.fms-help.com/students.htm for the past 17 years, but I still have to manage my
exposure to germs and viruses carefully, using essential
oils in the classroom, etc., washing my hair when I get
home, etc. (It's a part-time job just being a
fibromite!)
8.
SAVELLA
From a
reader--
"I found about 4 articles in your newsletters
www.fms-help.com/newsletters.htm
regarding Savella. Sounds like I better be very careful with this drug!
I'm going to give it a try and watch VERY carefullly for any side effects!
I already have a history of heart palpitations and this is one of the side
affects. My Dr even made the comment
"I have been waiting for a
Fibro patient that could be a guinea pig for me." I saw him
hoping for some other relief for my Fibro symptoms as I just have been feeling
horrible. I guess he was at least honest. I will start this evening
on a 'trial pack' which consists of me slowly weaning off of Cymbalta and on to
the Savella. BUT if I suffer ANY adverse side affects I will call him and
stop it immediately! He said there may be a period of adjustment where my
emotions will be on a roller coaster etc until I adjust to the meds. And, yes,
the info pack was pretty scary in describing this drug. I will at least
give it a try as it has worked for SOME people with Fibro. But proceeding very
cautiously!"
FROM DOM: Good idea!
I have always been very cautious with meds, having had so many bad experiences
with some of them, especially the ones I tried for sleep since 1982:
www.fms-help.com/sleep.htm. A current list if things that works well for
me is at www.fms-help.com/what.htm.
9. BURNING
MOUTH
"This is the first place I've read anything about the burning
mouth I've had for months. Thanks to the other readers for the
references that eventually led me to the Mayo Clinic site. I have some
real information to take to my doctor on Monday."
10. MAGNESIUM &
HEART BEAT
From a
reader--
"At age of 60, I was diagnosed with Mitral Valve
Prolapse
Syndrome. Had medications to control arrhythmia's and other
heart
related problems. I did not tolerate different heart
meds.Often
heart rate dropped to 28 beats p.m. or meds caused
atrial
fibrillation. Many other side effects, I suffered much!
Was
diagnosed with fibromyalgia at age 49 but as a child and
young
person already had Chronic Fatique Syndrome. There is a
DEFINITE
LINK between FIBROMYALGIA and MITRAL VALVE PROLAPSE (you
can Google
this). A friend suggested I take
liquid
Magnesium to regulate
heart beat and to avoid atrial fib. Have
taken it now for 6 years and
even though I have a Pacemaker, the Magnesium
has greatly helped my
heart. All my Dr's agree that I did the right thing!!
Each person in
his/her 50's is becoming more or less
deficient in Magnesium.
Magnesium is being used in more than 200 of the
body's biological
pathways and has many functions. The (concentrated)
Magnesium I take
comes in either 2 or 4 oz dropper bottles and I have
at all times a
bottle in my purse (my heart could go crazy while at
the
supermarket, I can take 2 to 3 dropper fulls in half cup of
water).
This is a first grade Magnesium 400 mg and 1120 Mg Chloride
in 0.08
tsp or 4ml liquid serving size, from the Great Salt Lake
in Utah,
LIQUID MAGNESIUM (concentr./ mix w/water) GOES MUCH QUICKER
INTO YOUR
SYSTEM than capsules, specially when your heart
needs it quickly to
stop uncomfortable flopping or racing. (Was given my own
liquid
Magnesium once in ICU for atrial fib when ER Dr gave me
meds to
raise low heart rate!!) Having had to deal with heart
problems and
the Fibromyalgia, has been a challenge, especially since I had
to work
full time till I was 68.....The use of liquid Magnesium has
helped
both conditions greatly. The Liquid Magnesium I use is called
Trace
Minerals and you can order it from: NATURES FOUNDATION in UTAH
PHONE
1-888-844-6286. (Their website
www.Naturesfoundation.com does not
show
the Liquid Magnesium, I usually call them.) Hope this info
will help
those that suffer from Fibromyalgia and the related Heart
problems
that many have! I know for a fact that there is a LINK
between the two conditions, I really
want others to know how to help
themselves better!! I usually run
everything by my DR's for approval and they
all approved this!!!"
11. FITNESS
SHOES
From a
reader--
"MY NIECE HIGHLY RECOMMENDS THESE SHOES. I HAVE
NOT TRIED THEM YET. SHE SAYS YOU NEED TO WEAR THEM JUST ONE HOUR A
DAY - THEN TWO HOURS A DAY ETC. SHE SAID THEY HAVE HELPED HER
GREATLY.
www.skechers.com/info/shape_ups.
12. READER SUFFERING
WITH CYSTS
"I was diagnosed with
Common Variable Immune
Deficiency 10 years ago. I am 62 yrs old, so this diagnosis so "late in
life" was a complete shock. How had three dozen specialists in all modalities
skip the one test (IGG) that would have diagnosed me years earlier. Because of
the late diagnosis, I am convinced that my immune system became so comprised
that I now suffer from CFS and Fibro. I also have been diagnosed with
mylodysplastic syndrome which I also blame on years of misdiagnoses. I now take
bi weekly infusions of Intravenous Gammaglobulin, which has helped lower the
number of infections dramatically. I am suffering from a new malady. Large
painful boil-like
reoccurring cysts under my arms. I would be
very interested to know if any of my fellow readers have problems like this.
They are extremely painful and despite my best efforts to shorten the course, it
usually take 5-7 long days to resolve. I have tried the usual "drawing" salves,
hot packs and lidocaine. Any advice would be wonderful. If readers want to
contact me directly, they can do so at
itreeit@aol.com. - Sissy"
13. MAKERS OF VACCINATION REFUSE TO TAKE
H1N1
From a reader--
14.
LYRICA
From a
reader--
"I have used Lyrica;; my doctor
used it for my fibro when it was not being used for it; since I have diabetes,
he was allowed to use it for my nerve damage....but I did not get to find out if
it worked because it made me a zombie."
FROM
DOM: See more reader comments about Lyrica at www.fms-help.com/newsletters.htm. Search Lyrica. One thing my doc recommended Lyrica
for was shingles nerve pain. I tried it for a few days to see if it would
help with fibro sleep, fog, etc. but felt really weird on it, like "hide the
knives and guns." However, I am managed well for the sleep disorder with
meds (thanks to my doc) www.fms-help.com/what.htm, and I
have several "remedies" for brain fog (some quick, some slow), with the
best one being the oxygenating drops<a href="http://neveranoutbreak.com/index.php?partner=FM5H1PDB"> that I began using a month ago. No fog in 4
weeks! No collapsing feeling either!
15. PAIN KILLER
DOESN'T HELP
From a
reader--
"Feeling really down today after being hospitalised with a
severe kidney infection, so in pain and 'trying' to recover from the
MASSIVE doses of morphine i was given to 'try' and alleviate my
pain. Have you found in some of your readers (and maybe yours) experiences that
us fibromites seem to have a huge tolerance to drugs? I was
given over 20mg of morphine over a few hours and was still in acute pain. The
drs at ED couldn't understand what on earth was going on. Is this a
common thing with fibro patients? I would be interested to hear yours
and your readers experiences in this area."
16. BE CLOTHED WITH
HUMILITY
From a
reader--
"You have such articulation
when it comes to explaining things of the Holy Spirit; in a world of such
negative advise, it is refreshing to 'meet' a person (in pain and weakness, no
doubt) who sees the bright side...the Light side (Christ) of life.
Yes, humility is something I want to perfect before I meet Him
face-to-face! I look back at my
younger days, and I see that I was arrogant and did not even KNOW
it. I use to really believe I had all the answers....so "helpful"
was I.....oh to CRINGE when I think of my 'youth'. It is so TRUE that it
is wasted on the young (for the most part, anyhow). HUMILITY is a word that I need to hear often! I wish to
be transparent about myself....I desire to be humble....to realize anything good
in ourselves is ONLY because of God's gifts he has given; I need the continued
discipline from the Lord. When I was healthy, I KNEW it. I appreciated it as much as I
was able to, but I did nothing about it as far as giving it back to God; I kept
myself so busy that I left God out. I could not even enjoy the present
moment; I was always thinking about what I would do next! I had unusual
amounts of energy and interest in things; I would keep going and going.
Even HEALTH was something that I was not a good steward in! I believe God has gifted me with the 'lack' of a things;
I have no real talent - I can do a lot of things....but I cannot do them
to perfection; as a matter of fact, most of what I do is done very slightly; and
that keeps me humble. I am no raving beauty, and as I age, I look
in the mirror thinking "if I were rich, I might be tempted to take care of a few
of these things"......but inside I DO appreciate the fact that I am not a
beauty, for I could not handle it...I have literally beautiful grand
daughters, and the youngest one concerns me because she knows she is beautiful
and does not know how to be humble about it....that would be ME. I know
it. It is in the lack of things that
I can even be arrogant! I mean, it would be just like me to use the fact
that God keeps things from me in order to TEACH me....to use it as a snub!
I don't snub people, but I have to be careful in everything I DO. I could
even turn THAT around to make myself seem more important than I AM.
God is so good....to have KEPT these things from
me - how GOOD he is. Riches in money, skill and talent and in physical
beauty can actually become curses for those who cannot be trusted with them; and
that is ME....sorry to say, but it is so. But I need to be
careful....like I said before, in my position of being 'denied' things for my
own good, it is the denial that could make PRIDE show its ugly face.
I can only imagine the time God has with me; sometimes I
ask Him if He isn't sick of me yet. I am such a difficult
child! I want to learn....in my "golden' years, I should have
learned a LOT by now....I guess I am spiritually ADD.
lol"
FROM
DOM: Back in my college days at UCLA (40 years ago - where has the time gone?!) a Christian friend was
wondering what to wear to a party. She recalled that we should be
"clothed with humility." Those wise words
coming from such a young person have stayed with me all these years!
She was one of the most inwardly beautiful
people I have ever known - so caring, kind and intelligent,
but not very attractive outwardly - at least by worldly
standards. But what a strong and Godly spirit she had! She later
married and had some kids - they must be in their 30's by now.
I found the verse: 1 Peter 5:5 - "Likewise, ye younger, submit
yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth
grace to the humble." Personally, I'm glad I wasn't more blessed
with more outer beauty, because I'm positive that pride
would have overtaken me. (God knows what he is
doing......ha!) About me wearing out from answering email, I get a ton of
email I can't answer, but there are some I just can't resist....like this one! -
I sure do
understand what you mean about meeting people when we don't look or feel our
best. But a spiritually positive thing about this
illness is it can be humbling and let us realize that it is our INNER BEAUTY
which is most important to God. I think of the Christians who are
deformed, like Nick http://www.lifewithoutlimbs.org/ born without legs, or so many others.
I was
meditating on these verses today: 1 Peter 3:3-5 (KJV)
-- 3Whose adorning let it not be that outward
adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of
apparel; 4But let it be the
hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of
a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great
price. 5For after this manner in the old time the
holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves. A reader who met me once at my house got all
dressed up .... to meet lowly little me. I felt bad that she felt she had
to fix up just to come over. Remember what Paul said in Galatians 4:13, 14: "Ye know how
through infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you at the
first. And my temptation which was in my flesh ye despised not, nor
rejected; but received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus."
Sometimes it's just our female pride that makes us want to look beautiful
outwardly. I have to balance that a lot in my life - you know - the inner
and outer beauty thing. Frankly, it's not too hard. in my case - inner
always wins over outer these days........ha!!! Here's a snippet from our church bulletin Sunday that explains it all:

Well, that's all for now. Whew!!! It's been quite
an adventure writing these
new shorter
newsletters instead of my former "jumbo" ones
www.fms-help.com/newsletters.htm. (I'm sure my loyal readers are much relieved by the
shorter format!) Our communication is more meaningful now, because we
are discussing fewer topics in each issue - which is much more manageable for us
mentally. It's amazing that there is always SO MUCH MORE to say
and share about FMS/CFIDS/ME!!! After 13 years of writing the newsletter,
I can still have new insights that arrive almost daily - and I continue to
feel a moral obligation to share this info with my fellow sufferers.
My two "hobbies" are piano and writing FMS/CFIDS/ME
newsletters. I am blessed to be able to do the two things that I
truly love!!!! I'm not a big TV watcher (although it can fill empty
hours, especially if you are sick, bored or stuck at home), but I do like to
read! My favorite type of book is "Christian fiction romance." OK,
so it's not heavy reading - I get enough of that with my health research and my
overwhelming email. But these short novels are a great escape and also build my
faith, which I also desperately need at
times. I
really like the "Love Inspired" titles from Steeple Hill publishers http://www.amazon.com/Steeple-Hill-Love-Inspired-Books/b?ie=UTF8&node=13432.
A friend from church loans me dozens of these books....her supply is endless, so
I am very happy!!! They are also available in public libraries....I
know we fibromites are mostly broke and can't spend money on frills. For
example, yesterday at the pharmacy, my "must have or I won't
sleep" meds came to $116.75 (and that's WITH a prescription
card!) My husband said this is why I don't have new clothes....but
not to worry - I shop at yard sales and thrift stores and love getting a great
buy!
Survival and comfort are the two
biggest things I look for in clothing. As a piano teacher and church
pianist, I want to (and should) look nice, but I am definitely not a
"fashion diva" anymore. I am reminded of what is
beautiful to God: "Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of
gold, or of putting on of apparel; But let it be
the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not
corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet
spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price." (I Peter 3:
