2.  NIACIN CAN CAUSE LIVER DAMAGE

From a reader--

"You mention taking niacin www.fms-help.com/033113.htm. My wife and I have switched to niacininide. You can go to earthclinic.com and type in Niacin B3 question, Ted says niacin can cause a fatty liver and explains why. Hope this can help as we all need answers. See http://www.earthclinic.com/Supplements/niacin_questions.html - Snippet: "08/03/2012: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Much of my use of Vitamin B3 has been niacinamide and never niacin. So if older postings say is niacin, it was probably altered or some unknown reason. I only use niacinamide. B3 is required in larger amounts in human nutrition and you can actually find that B3 niacinamide takes the largest portion of all the B vitamins, such as B1, B2, B5, etc. You can prove to yourself by going to the US Nutritional database on liver and breakdown, yet for some reason our present society has downplayed B3 to equal import. It is one of the most important supplements I use for sleep (as well as B12 at 1000 mcg), bipolar disorders, mental disorders (also used by Canadian Dr. Hoffer in treatment of cancer too). There is a popular notion that niacin reduces cholesterol, but I doubt it, it actually does that by changing the location of cholesterol from the arteries and vein and go to the liver to cause a fatty liver, in fact niacin you can end up with a liver problem. So basically it didn't get cholesterol lower, it basically goes to the liver! This is why I don't recommend it."

FROM DOM:  This article also says niacin causes liver damage: http://www.livestrong.com/article/509267-sustained-release-niacin-and-liver-damage/.  But this one says the opposite: http://www.earthclinic.com/Supplements/niacin.html.

3.  HOW TO KILL MOLD WITH BORAX

From a reader--

"My mom's pulmonary doctor told her a few years ago that he was very good at going in and cleaning out the lungs if she wanted.   She said she'd pass :). Our mold diagnostic told us to use Borax in the basement dry - sprinkle it everywhere. We have a very short crawl space in our basement we used a blower to blow the dry Borax up under that part of the basement.  Rooms over that area always smelled "old house musty".  The house is 90 years old.  Old house musty is not just old house - it is mildew and mold! We blew the dry Borax up under there maybe 3 times - and we don't have any musty odor any more - hoping that means no more mold in that area. Need to work on rest of basement (minus the junk) again. Borax is GREAT for bugs.  We sprinkled dry around our foundation.  We haven't had a spider in our house for a couple years! (I say now) And our little ants went away too!!  Being in the old house - we'd wake up and see several sitting on our bedroom ceiling - very creepy :)  Not now - haven't seen a one!!  Ants came every summer - they're gone.   Also, Borax is great for an area where you want NO vegetation to grow, like a rock garden.   We have a weed "Creeping Charley" - they recommend Borax to rid your self of that - only you can't use it where you want anything else to grow - it kills all greenery for several years.  Our rock garden is weed free - and I use potted plants in it."

FROM DOM:  I found some good info about borax killing mold at http://blacktoxicmolds.com/borax-kill-mold.php.

4. CHRONIC INFLAMMATORY RESPONSE SYNDROME (CIRS)

From a male reader--

"I think in your 100 tips www.fms-help.com/tips.htm you should add mold and Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS). I've had 2 doctors confirm that my FMS is actually CIRS. In my case It is most likely caused by mold or candida. I also have an inactive MTHFR-C677T gene which = poor detoxification which = build up of environmental toxins. I also have inactive VDR Taq and VDR Fok genes which = very poor infection control. Also the HLA-DR genes which = excessive inflammation. Sugar needs to be on the list as a major no no. Sugar is a FMS / CIRS patients' worst enemy."

FROM DOM: Yes, absolutely! Tip #62 in my 100 Tips for Coping with Fibromyalgia and Insomnia is about FRUCTOSE INTOLERANCE (SUGAR INTOLERANCE). This reader mentioned CIRS, MTHFR, VDR and HLA-DR. These issues have been address in past newsletters. Use the search box at the end of this page. Genetics can account for much of what we experience.

5. 70% ON THE WAY TO WELLNESS

From a reader--

"I'm 70% on my way to wellness, mostly with eliminating toxic food but failing at reducing massive oppressive daily stress."

FROM DOM: Stress is a fibromite's worst enemy! See my 100 Tips for Coping at www.fms-help.com/tips.htm.

6.  PAIN, SHAME & FATIGUE

From a male reader--

"Trying to manage the pain and the shame at the same time as the fatigue is tough."

FROM DOM: Men with fibro have to cope with the "stigma" of not being able to provide for their families. I have a page for men with fibro at www.fms-help.com/men.htm. This particular reader was denied disability, and I truly think he should appeal again, based on the severity of his symptoms. Here's a page on my site with tips from readers on how they got SSD: www.fms-help.com/disability.htm.

7.  DID ZITHROMAX CAUSE READER'S FIBROMYALGIA?

From a reader--

"I noticed your article at www.fms-help.com/031613.htm about the antibiotic Zihtromaz.  I had been on that in 1999 for pneumonia, and the very next day of finishing the scrip I started with my fibromyalgia pain which I didn't know for months  after several doctors and testing. I am sure to this day that Zithromax was the cause of it. It would be interesting to hear if anyone else has had this experience from it."

FROM DOM:  Write dombush@bellsouth.net if you have comments about Zithromax.  Personally, I have done okay with it in the past, but I truly believe my CFIDS began in 1987 www.fms-help.com/fatigue.htm from 6 different antibiotics (Ceclor, Bactrim, etc.) that I took from January to June that year for a resistant lung infection.

8.  ENZYMES FOR ASTHMA

9.  DAMAGED PITUITARY CAUSES ENDOCRINE PROBLEMS

From Betty Dowdell - Too Pooped to Participate - http://toopoopedtoparticipate.com/ --

"A month before my first birthday, a drunk driver smashed into my parents’ car, and I torpedoed, face first, from my mother’s lap into the car door. I suffered a concussion. No surprise there. What nobody seemed to know–and still doesn’t–is the fact that most concussions damage the pituitary gland, which sits behind the bridge of your nose. Since the pituitary gland controls the endocrine system, and the endocrine system controls all of health, this was huge. But I still had a head and various moving parts, so doctors pronounced me to be fine. My mother remembered my constant crying. Hurting babies cry a lot, and nothing comforted me. As time went on, my mother noticed other things that concerned her. She took me to doctor after doctor. All said I was fine. We moved a lot, and every move meant new doctors. Maybe one of them would take an interest and figure out what was going on, so off we’d go. Well, I’m one of five children, but none of the others had to keep going to doctors. Finally, I crankily asked my mother why I had to see doctors and the others didn’t. “Because you’re clumsy,” came her immediate reply. Well, with answers like that, I decided not to ask any more questions...I wish I had been more inquisitive. Hurtful or not, more answers might have accelerated my search when I finally realized it was up to me to regain my health. Puberty hit at 11, and things went downhill on ice. Doctors still said I was fine, though. The bottom fell out in my early twenties. My blood pressure was 70/40, but the doctor said my only problem was I wanted to get married. My blood sugar was in the 40s (normal is 80 to 100). My temperature averaged around 94.5 or so, maybe 95 on a good day. My pulse was in the 50s. Most of my hair fell out, and what was left changed color to a really drab dark brown. Drab hair on a half-bald head is never the answer to a maiden’s prayers. Shingles brought along their typical high level of pain. Fibromyalgia piled on. Staying awake was a real trick, even on the freeway as I drove to work. I developed Raynaud’s, and cold weather left my hands and feet looking like a corpse–with the same level of unfeeling. While teaching computer programming, I’d forget–mid-sentence–why I was in the room. My teaching notebooks were the size of Volkswagens, with just a few words on each page. When my brain cooperated, I didn’t even look at the notes, just turned the pages so I’d be at the right place when I blanked out. One quick glance got me going again. Several electroencephalograms (brain wave tests) “proved” I was fine. But I finally won the medical lottery. I found an exceptional doctor. Extremely knowledgeable, a doctor among doctors, he took me seriously. He diagnosed panhypopituitarism, which exlained my symptoms. Even my random areas of numbness–which no doctor had ever believed before. A year or so later, though, a job transfer took me across the country. And back to the land of “you’re fine” doctors. I realized if I ever wanted to live in health, it was up to me. I started researching and learned many, many things. All were important, but one was huge. While medicine views the endocrine system as separate and off in a corner somewhere, it’s actually at the center of everything. If you have any health problem, the endo system is involved. But medicine never considers endocrine involvement, so they practice medicine, especially in the prescriptions they write, in a way that leads to our skyrocketing disease and death rate. I went from “desperately seeking” health information to “madder than a wet hen” about the way medicine is practiced. Why? Because most doctors are not allowed to heal; it could cost them their medical licenses. (More about that another time.) Health magazines support the flawed medical model. So do health non-profits. As do all the other media outlets. Nutritionists, too. And pharmacists. Etc. We need to know a lot of stuff just to protect ourselves, let alone fix problems.  Decide to become your own health advocate, then just do it. You already know how you feel–and you’re the only one who does–so all you need is information. Which is what I offer."

10.  ANTHRAX VACCINE TESTING ON CHILDREN?

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2013/04/02/anthrax-vaccine-testing.aspx - Snippet: "The US government has proposed the need for a trial in children of anthrax vaccine, framing it as a necessary step in protecting them from the effects of a potential future bioterrorism attack using weaponized anthrax. The Alliance for Human Research Protection (AHRP) is in strong opposition to the trial and has submitted an exposé to Amy Gutman, PhD, Chair of the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues. Experimenting on the most vulnerable members of our society with a dangerous vaccine without the promise of any benefit to them is heartless, unethical and unnecessary, not to mention violates a number of federal regulations protecting children. The entire premise that we are at high risk for a bioterrorist attack is erroneous, and the idea that a vaccine is needed is ludicrous when antibiotics have proven 100 percent effective for anthrax exposure. The AHRP suggests the government’s motivation for this vaccine trial may be a backdoor effort to capitalize on the public’s post-9/11 fear with the goal of expanding civilian vaccinations and increasing vaccine profits by any means possible, while turning a blind eye to the well-known risks."

11.  DANGERS OF FRUCTOSE (SUGAR)

From a reader--

"The most dangerous sugar is fructose, which ironically has the lowest glycemic index. That fact has misled many people into thinking that sweeteners like agave nectar, which is almost pure fructose, is “safe for diabetics,” as you can often see it advertised. Scientists now realize that more than the minimal amounts of fructose found in fruit can lead to insulin resistance, weight gain, and high triglyceride levels. Ever since 1972 when John Yudkin published his seminal work on the subject, Pure, White, and Deadly, we have know that fructose uniquely raises serum triglycerides and insulin levels. I know from my own experience before I started eating low-carb foods, my triglyceride level dropped from 160 to 42. One of the best predictors of the risk of developing heart disease is the ratio of triglycerides to HDL. “If you have a ratio of around 2, you should be happy, indeed, regardless of your cholesterol levels,” while a ratio of 5, “is problematic,” write Drs. Johnny Bowden and Stephen Sinatra in The Great Cholesterol Myths, which I reviewed here. My triglycerides were up in my most recent lipid profile, but only to 51, and my HDL level was 64, giving me a ratio of less than 1. We get most of our fructose in table sugar, which is half fructose and half glucose (also known as dextrose), as well as in high-fructose corn syrup (or HFCS), which has about the same ratio. Other sugars include galactose, maltose, and lactose, but we don’t get enough of them to be concerned about nor do they have the same consequences as eating a lot of fructose."

14.  BROOKE SCHRADER

Used by permission of Joni and Friends International Disability Center--

Brooke Schrader

"Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?"  James 3:10-11

Brooke Schrader walked into my office last week, an eleven-year-old girl with soft blonde hair, a smattering of freckles, pixie-like eyes and a full mouth that easily broke into a grin. She was joined by her mother and pastor. They thought it would be good for her to meet another person who is facing tough limitations. Brooke has juvenile arthritis. I would never have guessed, except that her mother pointed out Brooke's fused ankle. After that, I noticed how she kept squeezing her hands and rubbing her knuckles. I also noticed her stiff gait. She was in a lot of pain. But her smile never showed it.

I asked if Brooke and I could spend some time alone in my art studio. We sat and talked about her friends at school, her hobbies, and her interest in art. Our discussion turned to spiritual things. I asked what her favorite verse was, thinking it might be the typical "Psalm 23" or "Romans 8:28" most kids would choose. I was not prepared for her answer. Brooke proudly quoted our verse for today.

This eleven-year-old girl with the ready smile explained: "I could do a lot of complaining about my arthritis, but I've learned that's not right. I want to trust God." Brooke's eyes held mine, revealing a wisdom far beyond her years. Her gaze burned right through me. I squirmed and privately confessed my disobedience in grumbling over a backache earlier in the day.

When Brooke left, a trail of some fresh scent remained. She had cleared the stuffy air in my office, reminding me I have nothing to complain about. God used a little child to lead me: "'Do you hear what these children are saying?' they asked Him. 'Yes,' replied Jesus, 'have you never read, "From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise?"'" (Matthew 16:21).

Lord, show me Your wisdom through a child this week.

Blessings,

15.  SUGARY DRINKS LEAD TO 180,000 DEATHS ANNUALLY

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2013/04/03/sugary-drink-consumption.aspx - Snippet: "Preliminary research suggests sugary beverages are to blame for about 183,000 deaths worldwide each year, including 133,000 diabetes deaths, 44,000 heart disease deaths and 6,000 cancer deaths. Among the 35 largest countries in the world, Mexico had the highest death rates associated with sugary beverage consumption. The US ranked third, with an estimated 25,000 annual deaths from sweetened drinks. Fructose has been identified as one of the primary culprits in the rise of obesity and related health problems, and while the majority of the problem is caused by the large quantities of high fructose corn syrup added to so many processed foods and sweetened beverages, naturally-occurring fructose in large amounts of fruit juice is also a problem. Coca-Cola recently released its latest enhanced water product called “Fruitwater.” Despite its name, the product does NOT contain any juice. Rather it’s sweetened with the artificial sweetener sucralose and synthetic chemical “natural fruit flavors.” Your most cost effective ideal beverage is plain filtered tap water. If you want a carbonated beverage, try sparkling mineral water with a squirt of lime or lemon juice."

FROM DOM: The best thing I've done for avoiding viral attacks, including sores, is eliminating sugar from my diet.  My tip (#62) about fructose intolerance has been on my site www.fms-help.com/tips.htm for about 15 years, and I just recently began to take it seriously.  I am one of those people who can't have sugar - it suppresses my immune system and causes candidiasis.  Occasionally, I will eat just a tiny bit of something sweet, then I stop, because I know the consequences.  I have no will power over sweets (an occasional donut was my favorite treat), but it isn't worth the suffering later.

16. SEAFOOD FRAUD (TUNA MAY NOT BE TUNA)

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2013/03/23/seafood-fraud.aspx - Snippet: "According to the nonprofit ocean protection group Oceana, nearly 60 percent of fish labeled 'tuna' in the US is not actually tuna. A shocking 84 percent of “white tuna” sold in sushi venues was actually escolar, a fish associated with acute and serious digestive effects if you eat just a couple of ounces. One-third of all fish samples tested across the US were found to be mislabeled; substituted for cheaper, less desirable and/or more readily available fish varieties. 87 percent of fish sold as snapper was actually some other type of fish. Grouper, halibut, and red snapper were sometimes substituted with king mackerel and tile fish, two types of fish the FDA advises pregnant women and other sensitive groups to avoid due to high mercury content. As seafood fraud and widespread contamination grows, along with mounting evidence of the critical importance of omega-3 fats found in fish, finding and using a viable alternative becomes an increasingly pressing issue. My favorite animal-based omega-3 source is krill oil, which also provides other important immune boosting benefits courtesy of the astaxanthin it contains. Recent research shows fish oil may help protect against skin cancer, and astaxanthin alone is already known to act as an 'internal sunscreen.'"

17.  13-QUESTION QUIZ ABOUT THE NEWS

From a reader--

http://www.pewresearch.org/quiz/the-news-iq-quiz/ - Snippet: "Do you know more about the news than the average American?  Test your knowledge of prominent people and major events in the news, by taking our short 13-question quiz. Then see how you did in comparison with 1,041 randomly sampled adults asked the same questions in a national survey conducted online Jan. 18-24 by the Pew Research Center. The new survey includes a mixture of multiple-choice questions using photographs, maps and symbols."

FROM DOM:  Wow.  Surprising. I got 12 out of 13...probably due to my husband talking to me every day about politics and the news.

18.  DANGERS OF MOLD

Reader 1--

"Our downstairs has a mold problem that we do not know what to do with (if you have money you can pay people to come out and fix this kind of thing).  Since the air handler is down there it circulates through the home. It will grow on surfaces. My wife visited a friend in the hospital recently who nearly died from cleaning a window air conditioner. Evidently, they had to reach into his body and manually pull the toxins off his lungs."

Reader 2--

"I have had exposure to mold. Had our house checked we had some issues.  It's an old house.  Addressed them but who knows.  My hubby has a mold related pneumonia that he has had for 4 years!  A ball of it up in his right lung.  He has COPD/ asthma and is more prone to mold infections. He hangs out in our old cinderblock basement all the time working on projects.  Doc explained it more a few weeks ago - maybe he'll stay out because it has spread to some other places in his lungs."

FROM DOM:  Mold can be deadly for people with the right genetic predisposition.  I became deathly ill from working in a moldy, bacteria-filled building in 2005 www.fms-help.com/mold.htm.  To find out if you have the "dreaded mold genome," scroll down that page to my Dec. 2011 update for a simple, free test you can do at home in minutes. (Fascinating!)

19.  BALANCE SODIUM (SALT) WITH POTASSIUM

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2013/04/04/high-salt-consumption.aspx - Snippet: "New preliminary research findings suggest excessive salt consumption contributed to 2.3 million heart-related deaths worldwide in 2010; 42 percent from coronary heart disease and 41 percent from stroke. However, previous research has NOT found strong evidence that cutting salt intake reduces the risk for heart attacks, strokes or death. In fact, salt restriction increased the risk of death in those with heart failure. Salt is an essential nutrient required for blood pressure regulation, transportation of nutrients into and out of your cells, ion exchange, and brain-muscle communication. But all salts are not equal, in terms of their impact on your health. Processed (table) salt is health harming, while natural unprocessed salt is not only healing, but in fact essential for many biological functions. Potassium deficiency may be more responsible for hypertension than excess sodium, and too much sodium along with too little potassium has been found to more than double your risk of death from a heart attack, compared to eating about equal amounts of both nutrients. Our ancient ancestors consumed 16 times more potassium than sodium. Many “experts” believe that a “normal” ratio today is four times as much potassium than sodium. It is helpful to strive for at least as much potassium from your diet as sodium. The best way to ensure you’re getting enough potassium is not to rely on the use of a supplement, but to avoid processed foods, and dramatically increase your vegetable intake. Juicing is a great way to get more vegetables into your diet."

20.  WALGREEN CLINICS WILL BEGIN TREATING CHRONIC ILLNESSES

http://www.foxnews.com/health/2013/04/04/walgreen-clinics-to-begin-treating-chronic-illnesses/

FROM DOM:  Last month my husband went to a clinic at CVS for a sinus infection. He was VERY pleased with the medical help he received!

21.  MONO VIRUS

From a reader--

"I have been especially worn out and tired.  Almost unable to stay awake at work.  I still work full time though it has been a struggle for years.  I have had a couple pretty good years though so have not been annoying the boss to much with days off - until  this year. I have taken 5 days due to fatigue and just feeling sick. I had double knee replacement a year ago and was off a month and part-time another month.  But healing takes at least a year with this major of surgery. Interestingly enough, I went to the doctor on my sick days last week and just got test results. First time in 30 years of being tested for Fibro and CFS that anyone has told me I have a Mono virus.  Apparently it has been in my system for some time and it could be active again -symptoms tell more than blood test I guess. I had a blister on the roof of my mouth which is probably why she tested for it. Never had that either. I'm wondering why at 60 years old dealing with Fibro for 30 years has no one ever found a mono virus!?  I just found out Mono is related to the Epstein-Barr Virus.  So is Chickenpox and Herpes! I wonder how much Fibro is related to all that!! What else could they be missing in blood work?? I had a Neurologist tell me 20 years ago he thought they'd come up with a new name for Fibro - a specific disease related name - like they did with AIDS, he said."

FROM DOM:  This is a good question! What do you ask your doc to test for when they do bloodwork? Please write dombush@bellsouth.net. I just had a bunch of labwork done (out of pocket  $$$) and everything came back normal, including my cholesterol, which had been through the roof for years. But I don't think I've ever been tested for viruses, such as herpes, mono, EBV, etc. - if I was, it was decades ago. Was diagnosed with fibro in 1982 www.fms-help.com/fibro.htm and CFIDS in 1987 www.fms-help.com/fatigue.htm.

22.  AMERICA IN COLOR 1939-1943

http://extras.denverpost.com/archive/captured.asp - "These images, by photographers of the Farm Security Administration/Office of War Information, are some of the only color photographs taken of the effects of the Depression on America’s rural and small town populations. The photographs are the property of the Library of Congress and were included in a 2006 exhibit Bound for Glory: America in Color."

FROM DOM:  My!  How times have changed...for the better - at least physically.

23.  CANCER CLINICS TURNING AWAY MEDICARE PATIENTS

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2013/04/03/cancer-clinics-are-turning-away-thousands-of-medicare-patients-blame-the-sequester/. - Snippet: "Cancer clinics across the country have begun turning away thousands of Medicare patients, blaming the sequester budget cuts. Oncologists say the reduced funding, which took effect for Medicare on April 1, makes it impossible to administer expensive chemotherapy drugs while staying afloat financially."

FROM DOM:  With the increasing problem of getting health insurance and health care, it behooves all of us to do everything we can....and learn everything we can...about our bodies and how to take care of them. Some illnesses can be avoided - some can't. But at least we can try. I am so grateful for the internet for doing medical research. Patients can be MUCH more informed now than in pre-internet years. When I see my doc (internal medicine) for med checks, it's wonderful to be able to know what medications are for, any side effects, etc.  In days gone by, people would be prescribed a medication and not even know what it was for or how it worked!  They blindly took "pills" prescribed by their doctors. No wonder drugs got a bad name. If something doesn't work for me - and I can tell very quickly - I stop taking it, reduce dosage, or let the doctor know.  A list of everything I've found helpful in my quest for health since being diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 1982 and CFIDS in 1987 is at www.fms-help.com/what.htm.  I have been a guinea pig for that long!

24.  TARANDA GREENE

FROM DOM: A friend from church sang "I Have Come by the Way of The Cross" (TaRanda Greene) on Easter evening.  It was such a phenomenal song!  So I looked up TaRanda Greene and found her bio at http://tarandamusic.com/taranda - it was very touching and tragic.  You never know what life will bring!

25.  WILLIAM SHATNER'S TINNITUS

http://www.audionotch.com/blog/hearing/william-shatner-speaks-about-his-tinnitus-during-a-video-interview/ - Snippet: "Here’s a wonderful video interview with actor William Shatner talking about his tinnitus and how it affected him."

FROM DOM:  I've had ringing in the ears 24/7 for the past 20 years. It is actually "ringing in the brain." Much on this topic in past newsletters. Use search box at the end of this page.

25. THE ENCOURAGING WORD

"Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me." - Hebrews 13: 5,6
