1.  READERS WRITE

"I read your newsletters and try to stay informed because I feel my fibro symptoms are worsening.  You have been a great help to me."

"I enjoy getting your newsletters as they are always filled with great information and feedback."

2.  MOLD, COLD SORES, ANTI-VIRALS, LYME

From a reader--

"Did your problems start with Mold exposure?  The chronic cold sores,
were they are problem before or after?

My problems started with Mold exposure but even after it was gone mine
persisted.

Another piece of the puzzle came later.........

It seemed to have damaged my immune system.  I got a case of shingles.
I took valtrex for shingles, and noticed a large improvement in
cognitive functions, very clear headed while taking it.  This lead me to
wonder if it were viral based.

I went to a physician who had CFS and found it to be HHV6.   He tested
me and I came up positive for CMV and LYME.
I was not expecting lyme.

6 weeks of IV abs and my fog is gone, I'm not 100% but much better than
before.   I may need to go on antivirals for CMV if titers remain high.

So its seems I had dormant lyme spirochetes.   I do remember a MONO like
illness years prior.  Apparently this bacteria can remain in a almost
dormant state.
The MOLD/Steroids reactivated it along with CMV.
The blood clots were from chronic inflammation from low grade infection.

For the first time my body seems to be healing or moving in a positive
direction.   After 3 years of going downhill it feels great.

I have always felt that CFS and other similar diseases had a infectious
source.   Ideally boosting the immune system should help but if not Abs
and antivirals might be the best bet.

I was wondering have you ever been on antivirals?"

FROM DOM:  I have been on antiviral therapy to suppress the virus, but felt
no better.  The doses to control shingles and cold sores were toxic to
the kidneys per my internal medicine doc, so I'm glad one of my readers told
me about oxygen drops and DMSO.  They have been a BLESSING!!!!
Shingles and cold sores are the pits!!!  The cold sores started being a
problem 10 years ago, and getting worse every year until they were almost
continuous. Then shingles hit twice this year.  I am fighting back now with the
oxygen and DMSO and so far so good - it's been 11 weeks.  I don't take the
antivirals anymore. Interesting about Lyme!  I was tested for that, but it
came back negative.

3.  LETTER TO A FIBRO "CRITIC"

FROM DOM:  This is the letter I promised to share in my last newsletter www.fms-help.com/102609.htm.  It was written by a reader whose friend made hurtful comments to her about having fibro, and it was threatening their friendship.

From a reader--

"Dear _____

I am writing you this letter in the hope you may begin to understand what I/we live with. First off I want you to know that I love you, I value our friendship & would hate to lose that friendship. But I must tell you that your continuing comments that my FMS/CFS must be the result of prior stresses in my life or even that it might be spiritual, hurt me so much that I need to tell you this.. If you continue to say these things to me or in my presence, I will, for my health sake, have to choose not to talk to you or be with you. If you cannot refrain from saying such things, I will still love you, but will no longer spend time with you or talk with you.

It grieves me to have to say these things to you - but I have to look after myself the best I can.
FMS/CFS are NOT psychological, in fact they have been proven to be a neurological illness - sometimes triggered by something as simple as a virus.

Would you 'judge' somebody with lupus or rheumatoid arthritis the way I feel you are judging me? I don't think so.

I thank you for your love, friendship and care and I hope not to lose that. But, unfortunately this letter had to be written.

You need to understand - I am ill. Physically ill - not mentally or spiritually.

This is sent with much love,

Blessings to you,"

4.  DR. TEITELBAUM & THE FIBRO & FATIGUE CENTERS

From a reader--

"Just a quick note, but I wanted to speak up for Dr. Teitelbaum's work. I know he's the founder of these clinics and all, but we live too far away from any of them for my wife to go there, so I can't speak to the centers.

What I can speak to is the efficacy of Dr. Teitelbaum's recommendations in his two books, "From Fatigued to Fantastic!" and "Pain Free 1-2-3". Until there is a true cure, the best we can hope for is relief from the symptoms.

My wife has been following the recommendations Dr. T. makes in his two books, and she has had marked improvement in every category. We have sort of pieced together a treatment plan from the list of supplements on his web site and the books, and given the usual six to eight week time it seems to take for the natural supplements to really show any effect, my wife has been very pleased with the results. It's not perfect, and it's not every day, and she goes through stretches of time when nothing seems to help, but over all she is doing WAY better than when she was taking all of the allopathic (sometimes called "Western") medicine.

For one thing, most (but not all!) of these supplements have no or few side-effects, unlike all of the prescription meds. So I guess all I'm saying is, buy the book ("From Fatigued to Fantastic!") from Amazon (his books are cheap compared to other similar books) and try his SHINE protocol, but just try one thing at a time for 6-8 weeks and see how it works for you. He doesn't require you to buy his brand of supplements to try his protocol. You can buy them from his web site, but you can buy all of it elsewhere on the Web and it's often cheaper.

Dr. T says he only assisted Enzymatic Therapy to develop a line of supplements, and he donates the profits to charity. You can often find the same supplement on sale somewhere, or on a different label and on sale, and it's fine.

Anyway, all I'm saying is, don't throw the baby out with the bath water. You can try working with Dr. T's approach on your own without going to a center some place. Go at your own pace, and "prove all things, hold fast to that which is good" - if it works and you can afford it, you are doing your body a favor.

It's take a long time for a lot of this to yield benefits, but I learned a long time ago that this approach is all about rebuilding the body's own systems, not about relieving symptoms. It takes longer to see results, but the results are "deeper" and longer lasting."

5.  SUICIDAL IDEATION

From a reader--

"Re: the person who reported having suicidal thoughts in your newsletter www.fms-help.com/102609.htm, is this person taking antidepressants or other psychotropic drug?  It is possible that the "suicidal ideation" so common in psych drugs may be the culprit.  I had the same reaction, thoughts of jumping out of the car or off the balcony, and it definitely came from the drugs I was given.  Fish oil SAVED my life!  It rebalanced my nervous system, along with a good multiple vitamin, extra B complex, and magnesium, and an excellent diet."

FROM DOM:   Excellent points!  Many thanks to this reader.  Be sure to get a good quality fish oil - some cheaper brands are rancid in the bottle.  Write dombush@bellsouth.net for the excellent fish oil (Omega 3) I use - it helps me with depression.  If you are having suicidal thoughts, click on www.fms-help.com/suicide.htm.  Be assured that many readers of this newsletter have walked the same path you are on and truly understand what it's like to have this chronic illness.  I have much encouragement on my homepage www.fms-help.com and in my newsletters www.fms-help.com/newsletters.htm

6.  MOLD ILLNESS

From a reader--

"My allergies are severe and my body has a constant all over burning sensation everyday like pins and needles since I was exposed. The only time it stops is when I take a shower. I have lung pain that is excruciating and brain fog that makes it so hard to concentrate. I left my job because I felt so awful and am unemployed now because of how fatigued I am. If I go for a short walk I feel like I just ran a marathon.  Most of my family doesn't believe how bad I feel, making it hard to even function.  I am frightened at going through life feeling like this indefinitely. This has been so physically and emotionally draining and I just want this nightmare to be over. It's gone on for far too long already. Does your mind feel better? I keep reading about how toxic mold causes brain damage. I have this fog and I'm frightened that my memory and concentration difficulties might be permanent."

FROM DOM:  I really feel for this reader.  I am extremely allergic to mold too.  My worst, most dreadful (nearly deadly) encounter was in 2004-2005 www.fms-help.com/mold.htm where I worked.  I am considerably better now (5 years later), but the mold was a terrible setback to my FMS/CFIDS and it has taken me years to try to recover.  I also have to take a LOT of things (sleep meds & supplements) to keep functional now (list at www.fms-help.com/what.htm).  The oxygen drops have done the most to help the brain fog - at least for the past 11 weeks.  But there are other things that helped me too.

9.  DISRUPTION OF CIRCADIAN RHYTHM AFFECTS BRAIN & BODY OF MICE

From a reader--

Rockefeller University researchers
have found that chronic disruption
of one of the most basic circadian
(daily) rhythms -- the day/night
cycle -- leads to
weight gain,
impulsivity, slower thinking, and
other physiological and behavioral
changes
in mice, similar to those
observed in people who experience
shift work or jet lag.

"Given the recent comparison of CFS to AIDS, the following may interest you.  Looks like HIV & AIDS are no more than a compilation of symptoms, much like FMS & CFS.  AARRGGHH.  See http://www.naturalnews.com:80/027354_AIDS_HIV_immune_system.html and http://www.naturalnews.com:80/027355_AIDS_HIV_disease.html."

11.  CERTAIN ANTIDEPRESSANTS MAY INHIBIT HERPESVIRUS INFECTION AND REACTIVATION

From a reader (doctor)--

"Some more information for you.   I had heard anecdotally from patients that they seemed to get sick less often when taking  zoloft, paxil etc.   Maybe there is something to it. http://www3.niaid.nih.gov/news/newsreleases/2009/herpesvirus.htm"

BULLETIN

Certain Antidepressants May Inhibit Herpesvirus
Infection and Reactivation

The viruses that cause cold sores, chickenpox, and shingles require a host cell protein complex to initiate infection, but certain antidepressants appear to disrupt the activity of that complex and potentially prevent infection, according to scientists from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health.

In a study now online in Nature Medicine, a research group led by Thomas M. Kristie, Ph.D., chief of the Molecular Genetics Section in the NIAID Laboratory of Viral Diseases, found that the host enzyme LSD1 interacts with a key host protein (HCF-1) that the herpesviruses require to infect host cells. In these cell and tissue studies, which involved herpes simplex virus (HSV) and varicella-zoster virus (VZV), HCF-1 was required to recruit LSD1 to the viral genome and initiate infection. HSV infection can cause cold sores and genital lesions, and VZV infection causes chickenpox and shingles.

When Dr. Kristie’s group reduced levels of either HCF-1 or LSD1, they noticed a corresponding decrease in the ability of HSV and VZV to express the viral genes necessary to continue infection. These results established the relationship between LSD1 and HCF-1 and the importance of each protein in initiating both HSV and VZV infections.

The scientists also knew from previous studies that LSD1 is similar to a family of enzymes whose activity is inhibited by monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)—drugs used to treat clinical depression, anxiety and other disorders.

Therefore, the researchers tested the ability of the MAOI drugs pargyline and tranylcypromine (TCP) to inhibit HSV and VZV infection and observed significantly decreased levels of virus. The observation identified LSD1 as an essential control component and target for preventing herpesvirus infection.

After the initial infection, both HSV and VZV enter a latent state in nerve cells of the infected host.  Periodically these viruses can reactivate to produce infection and disease. The researchers demonstrated that, in addition to preventing infection, the MAOI drug TCP also prevented HSV reactivation. Importantly, says Dr. Kristie, the study contributes to the understanding of the mechanisms used by these viruses to infect host cells and of their cycles of latency-reactivation.

“As LSD1 is a well-defined target of MAOIs and these pharmaceuticals are widely used therapeutically, these observations identify a novel therapeutic target for herpesvirus infections and enhances the importance of ongoing efforts to develop additional LSD1 inhibitors,” the study states.

The researchers are continuing to analyze the unique HCF-1 protein complex to identify other components that are important for initiating herpesvirus infections and reactivating these viruses from latency.

12.  INSOMNIA

From a reader--

"Thank you so much for writing about your insomnia www.fms-help.com/insomnia.htm with Fibromyalgia and CFS. I have always said that if I could just sleep properly than I would feel better. When I read your story I really thought that I was reading mine. I can't believe there is someone out there like me. I don't really hear to many people with Fibromyalgia or CFS talk about insomnia. If they do it is a symptom way down the list. Mine is the #1 symptom."

FROM DOM:  Torturous insomnia wrecked my life for decades.  It started when I was 16.  I am now 57.  A list of things I've tried for sleep is at www.fms-help.com/sleep.htm.  A list of things I use now is at www.fms-help.com/what.htm - I am thankful for meds, supplements and lifestyle changes that help me manage my sleep disorder.  There is even something called Fatal Familial Insomnia, if you want to google it.

13.  TINNITUS (RINGING IN THE EARS)

From a reader--

"I am wondering if you could post something about tinnitus.........if anyone has done anything/taken any supplements, etc. that has decreased the ringing or completely eliminated it?"

FROM DOM:  I have had tinnitus for decades.  It used to be just awful!!!  As a piano teacher and church musician, I am exposed to loud noises a lot.  The ringing has gotten better, but it is always there.  I have found that it helps to avoid loud noises.  Also, certain medications make it worse.  If anyone has found relief from tinnitus, please write dombush@bellsouth.net and I'll share your thoughts in upcoming newsletters.  Also, try a search of my past newsletters by using the Google box at the end of this page.

14.  10 WAYS TO PREVENT OR REDUCE A COLD OR THE FLU

From Dr. Rodger Murphree--

Here are some things that may help prevent you getting a cold or flu this year.

1. Wash Your Hands Often

Most cold and flu viruses are spread by direct contact. Someone who has the flu sneezes onto their hand,
shakes your hand, touches the telephone, the keyboard, a kitchen glass or anything that you may come in
contact with. The germs can live for hours -- in some cases weeks -- only to be picked up by the next person
who touches the same object. Make sure to wash your hands often.

If no sink is available, rub your hands together very hard for a minute or so. That also helps break up most of
the cold germs. Or rub an alcohol-based hand sanitizer onto your hands. I recommend you keep a bottle of
sanitizer in your purse, car, and on your desk at work. Keep a bottle handy at all times. Don't take chances -
periodically use Clorox Wipes to wipe down computer keyboards, telephones, TV remotes, and doorknobs
at work and at home.

2. Don't Cough into Your Hands

Because germs and viruses cling to your bare hands, muffling coughs and sneezes with your hands results in
passing along your germs to others. It is just too easy to pass germs from hand-to-surface contact.

When you sneeze or cough, use a tissue, then throw it away immediately. If you don't have a tissue, turn your
head away from people near you and cough into the air.

3. Keep Your Hands Away From Your Face

Cold and flu viruses enter your body through the eyes, nose, or mouth. Children catch colds by touching their
faces or placing their fingers in their mouths. Of course, children are often the main carriers of germs and pass
colds on to their parents.

4. Drink Plenty of Fluids

Water flushes your system, washing out the poisons as it rehydrates you. A typical, healthy adult needs a minimum
of eight 8-ounce glasses of fluids, preferably water, each day - more if they are exercising and sweating.

5. Sauna Therapy

Researchers aren't clear about the exact role saunas play in prevention, but one 1989 German study found that
people who steamed twice a week got half as many colds as those who didn't. One theory: When you take a
sauna you inhale air hotter than 80 degrees, a temperature too hot for cold and flu viruses to survive.

6. Get Fresh Air on a Daily Basis

A regular dose of fresh air is important, especially in cold weather when central heating dries you out and makes
your body more vulnerable to cold and flu viruses. Also, during cold weather more people stay indoors, which
means more germs are circulating in crowded, dry rooms.

7. Boost Your Beneficial Bacteria

Some studies have shown that eating a daily cup of low-fat yogurt can reduce your susceptibility to colds by 25
percent. Researchers think the beneficial bacteria in yogurt may stimulate production of immune system substances
that fight disease. You can get the same effect by taking probiotic capsules on a daily basis.

8. Get a Good Night's Sleep

A recent study shows that people who sleep less than seven hours a night are three times as likely to catch a cold.
The study supports the theory that sleep is important to immune function, according to Sheldon Cohen and
colleagues at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

"Although sleep's relationship with the immune system is well-documented, this is the first evidence that even
relatively minor sleep disturbances can influence the body's reaction to cold viruses," Cohen said in a statement.

9. Don't Overdo It!

Try to reduce your stress - don't overdo it. Too much physical activity, including exercise, and/or mental stress,
lowers your immune system. Take it easy, slow down, and try to make more time to relax.

10. Natural Herbal Supplements Proven to Help Reduce Cold and Flu Symptoms

For children, I recommend over-the-counter liquid elderberry or Sambucol. Kids love the taste, I know mine do, and the stuff works great at preventing and reducing the symptoms of the cold and flu.

15.  STRESS , LOW THYROID, ADRENAL FATIGUE & FIBROMYALGIA

From Dr. Rodger Murphree's health newsletter (go to www.treatingandbeating.com to sign up)--

Most of us can handle the ups-and-downs of our daily stress, even the occasional catastrophe. We suck it up, dig deep, and persevere. However, some individuals have an altered stress-coping system which prevents them from managing daily stress.

Retrospective studies show that the stress of emotional, physical, or sexual abuse during childhood increases the future risk of developing certain symptoms or illnesses. These illnesses include many of the same symptoms associated with low thyroid and fibromyalgia, including fatigue, poor sleep, chronic pain, chronic viral infections, anxiety, and depression.

Apparently, for some children and adolescents, too many traumatic or stressful events decondition their normal homeostatic stress-coping abilities. Thus, stress and particularly traumatic stress, early in life, may alter the set point of the stress response system rendering these individuals prone to stressful events later in life.  This most likely occurs from over-stimulation and depletion of certain stress-coping hormones including serotonin, norepinephrine, cortisol, and DHEA.

Research shows that patients with fibromyalgia have genetic tendencies that cause them to be affected more drastically by the ups and downs of stress. Fibromyalgia patients are also more likely to report a history of emotional, physical, or sexual abuse during childhood and adulthood, compared to other patient subgroups.

Sadly, I find that many of my fibromyalgia and CFS patients have experienced physical, emotional, or sexual abuse as a child.

Stress is the main culprit in low thyroid function as well.
